SIMPLE TIPS FOR GOING GREEN IN BALTIMORE

Here at Symphony Center Baltimore apartments, we encourage everyone to develop some eco-friendly habits. Going green doesn’t have to be a difficult or expensive process; in fact, there are lots of small changes you can make that will make a big difference. Symphony Center is proud to offer you some easy tips on greening your lifestyle:

Recycle: We’ve all heard the old saying: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. At Symphony Center, we make it easy. You’ll find one large yellow recycle container per floor in your building’s trash room; all you have to do is drop off your recyclables in this container.

The following are acceptable items for recycling, once rinsed out:

Metal: aluminum, tin and steel cans (e.g. soup, pet food, empty aerosol, vegetable, tuna, soda)

Plastic: narrow neck and screw top bottles and jars with symbols 1 - 7 (e.g. soda, detergent/bleach, shampoo, water, milk, juice, ketchup)

Glass: bottles and jars (e.g. brown, clear, or green)

Mixed Paper: mixture of various qualities of paper/all colors (e.g. newsprint, folders, office/school paper, magazines, cardboard, cereal boxes, telephone books, mail)

Let the sunshine in: Keep your electricity usage low by leaving the lights off when you can. You’ve got a beautiful view of the city or courtyard just outside your huge windows – why not let the sun provide natural light during the day?

Brighten up: Of course, sometimes you do need to have your lights on, but there are still ways to save energy. Try switching to compact fluorescent bulbs in your lamps, a very simple change that will help you use less electricity and prevent greenhouse gas emissions.

Ride a bike: At Symphony Center, you have a variety of restaurants, shopping, and fun activities just outside your door. Why not reduce pollution and get some exercise at the same time?

Use public transportation: When you do need to venture further than your feet will take you, try using the bus or light rail instead of your car. Carbon monoxide emissions could be reduced by 20% if one in five Americans rode public transport daily instead of using their car. Symphony Center Baltimore apartments are located near all kinds of public transportation, making it easy to find an eco-friendly method of travel.

Limit your laundry: Sure, you’re happy to have your very own washer in your new apartment – just be sure to use it only when you need to. Did you know that 99 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions could be saved per household each year by running only full loads of laundry? Waiting until you have a full load also saves a ton of water, one of our most precious natural resources.

Eat green: Add a touch of green to your brand new gourmet kitchen. First, choose cookware and utensils that will last – stainless steel and cast iron cookware will last much longer than Teflon. For foods, buy locally when possible. Buying from local farmers cuts down on the need to use fossil fuels to transport produce from faraway fields. Check out the 32nd Street Farmers Market on Saturdays for nearby fresh fruits and vegetables.
